1-ON-1 TUTORING -

 A HOLISTIC APPROACH:

COLLEGE PREPARATION AND APPLICATION

Preparing for College and Beyond –

The demands of college can be a struggle for new students, especially students with disabilities.

  • Navigating college level support for learning disabilities

  • Preparing and submitting applications

  • SAT/ACT prep

  • Preparing for college level reading and writing demands

  • Creating organizational systems that students internalize

  • Supporting work/technology/social balance

DEVELOPMENT OF ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS

The demands on the organizational and executive functioning resources have never been greater for high school and college students. Often students spend 5 hours “working” when only 30 minutes of that was actual time on task. These students often need help with:

  • Technology/entertainment moderation

  • Electronic tracking of time on task

  • Iterative reflection for process improvement

  • Building a college ready organizational system

DEVELOPMENT OF WRITING

Writing at the college level can be a struggle, especially for students with disabilities. Developing an effective process for writing and making it automatic is the goal. Important skills include:

  • Effective notetaking

  • Increasing writing speed, fluency and accuracy

  • Establishing an effective essay writing process

  • Typing, handwriting and voice dictation tools and strategies

Gaining confidence in reading complex material is critical to success in college. The ability to create one’s own meaning from written material and internalize it is key in this process. We work to develop strategies including:

  • Active reading approaches

  • Understanding the difficult underlying structure of English

  • Strategies for summarization, reviewing and comprehension

EMOTIONAL ASPECTS OF DISABILITIES

Developing feelings of value and effectiveness  –

Growing up with a learning disability can adversely impact how a student sees their own capabilities. Many times students need help with:

  • Understanding disability is not your fault, but your work is your responsibility

  • Maximizing the unique talents of all students

  • Effectively and independently addressing emotional issues related to struggling in school
